Rett syndrome is a rare, neurological disorder that presents itself in children, mostly girls, from 6 to 18 months old. Early signs of the disease include loss of speech and hand use, and other neurological functions. Rett syndrome results from mutations in the MECP2 gene, a gene critical to the production of a protein needed for brain function. Atypical Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is diagnosed when a child has some of the symptoms of Rett syndrome but does not meet all the diagnostic criteria. Like the classic form of Rett syndrome, atypical Rett syndrome mostly affects girls.
